Teak

Teak furniture: extremely durable and beautifulThink of teak, think of yachting and durability. Teak has very dense graining which prevents rot, even in our wet climate. The natural oil in teak repels wood eating insects. Old growth teak (from trees 50 years or older) is so tightly grained it stays smooth forever.

Watch out for imitations; woods that are "related" to teak are cheaper but won't last like teak.

Teak comes in different grades depending on where it is grown, how old it is, and whether it has knots or not. Quality teak has mortise and tenon joinery with solid brass and/or stainless steel connectors.

Teak has a satiny feel even when it isn't oiled. It turns a beautiful silver when exposed to the weather. If that doesn't appeal to you, consider another material because oiling teak can be a time consuming, thankless job.

Expect good quality teak to be in the high price range.
